It is located in the extreme north of Italy and borders with Switzerland, Piedmont, Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige and Emilia-Romagna.

Lombardy is half occupied by the Po Valley and the rest is mountainous and hilly.

Particularly rich in nature, history, art and culture, it offers ski enthusiasts modern facilities and equipment in the famous resorts of Tonale, Bormio, Livigno and Madesimo.

The western side of Lake Garda , with Sirmione and other renowned locations, is a tourist destination known all over the world; Lake Como and Lake Maggiore are also enchanting, surrounded by noble villas, parks and enchanting villages.

The provinces are: Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Lecco, Lodi, Mantua, Milan, Monza and Brianza, Pavia, Sondrio, Varese .

WHAT SEE

Duomo - Simone Daino

Monza with the racetrack, the Villa Reale and the Duomo or Brescia and the Monastery of San Salvatore.

Cremona , a city with Renaissance palaces famous for luthiers (Stradivari), or Pavia with the hundred towers, the Visconti Castle and the University.

Varese called the “garden province”. While Sondrio , with the stupendous Masegra Castle.

Lecco which owes its fame to “I Promessi Sposi” of Manzoni and Bergamo with the Carrara Academy, the Colleoni Chapel and the Donizetti Theater and, finally, Como , on the rich western side of the lake, known for its beautiful villas including Villa Olmo .

The Lombardy has five UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Mantua , city of the Gonzagas, Sabbioneta , the city of the Italian Renaissance, i Sacri Monti in the Varese and Ossuccio area, the prehistoric rock paintings of Valcamonica, la Rhaetian railway that crosses the mountain landscapes of Albula and Bernina, thenineteenth-century industrial settlement of Crespi d’Adda and, finally, Milan, where, in the beautiful church of Santa Maria delle Grazie you can admire the fresco of Last Supper made by Leonardo da Vinci.

Also in Milan are the Teatro alla Scala , the famous stage of world opera, the Castello Sforzesco , and the Duomo , the white marble church dedicated to Maria Nascente.

TRADITIONAL CUISINE

Gorgonzola - Towfiqu Barbhuiya

Typical dishes are: saffron risotto , Pavese egg soup, Milanese cutlet , cassœula with pork and cabbage, pizzoccheri, bresaola, raw salami from Varzi, lavarelli (freshwater fish dried and grilled).

Among the cheeses: gorgonzola , mascarpone di Lodi, parmesan, robiola, beautiful country.

The desserts are also famous, among them we remember the panettone of Milan, the amaretti of Saronno, the sbrisolona cake of Mantua with hazelnuts, the nougat of Cremona.

The wines are also valuable, including: Grumello, Inferno, Sassella della Valtellina as well as wines and sparkling wines produced in Franciacorta , such as Bonarda and Barbera dell’Oltrepò Pavese.

WHAT TO DO

Lombardy is the ideal destination for those who want to be in contact with nature, sport or simply for those who want to relax.

Skiing and snowboarding in the famous ski resorts of Livigno, Bormio, Aprica. During the summer the mountain becomes the ideal place for lovers of climbing, rafting, trekking and mountain biking.

For a wellness holiday there are spas rich in waters with therapeutic properties, such as Terme di Boario or those of Bormio while the Lake Garda , that of Como and that d’Iseo ensure stays of rest and fun with the possibility of sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing, cycling, trekking, excursions in the surrounding area and boat trips.

Do not forget the wine routes : in the Valtellina, in the Lodi area, in the Oltrepò Pavese, in Franciacorta, famous all over the world for its bubbles.
