How illustrious was your noble district

The Lucania, today’s Basilicata, is located in southern Italy, enclosed between Campania and Calabria, overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea to the west with Gulf of Policastro which has high and jagged coasts and to the east on the Ionian Sea with the two well-known localities of Metaponto and Policoro, which instead offer wide beaches of fine sand or pebbles.

Mainly mountainous, it offers snow in the four months of autumn-winter, sunny beaches and clear sea from spring to autumn. It is a land that offers different types of tourism: cultural, naturalistic, sporting and adventurous.

There are two provinces: Potenza and Matera.

WHAT SEE

Basilicata_romaoslo

Materaย with the โ€œcity of stoneโ€, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, a village that looks like a crib, sprinkled with Rupestrian churches.

The stones, are a testament to how the man was able to live in harmony with natural resources: rock, water and sun were sufficient to the cycle of life, lasted for centuries.

Always in Matera you can see the โ€œChristโ€, with its 22 meters high, is the tallest statue of Italy and the sixty-sixth highest in the world.

Theย Pollino National Parkย is a paradise for trekking, hiking, mountain biking, rafting, canyoning and climbing with 192 hectares of protected area, the habitat of the Apennine Wolf, roe deer, Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon and black Woodpecker.

Potenza is beautiful with its many testimonies of the past: the 12th-century Cathedral,ย the Torre Guevara, the Malvaccaro Roman Villa, the shrine of St. Gerard and the National Archaeological Museum and the Archaeological Museum.

TRADITIONAL CUISINE

Main element of the lucanian cuisine is the pork: ham, sausage, and bacon used for dishes such as cotechino, fried pork, peppers with pork and black pudding; also used are mutton and lamb.

Among fish dishes there are soups, eels, trout and the Baked cod. Very popular is also homemade pasta: orecchiette, cavatelli, strozzapreti, fusilli and strascinate. Donโ€™t forget cheeses: scamorza, Provola and ricotta.

The most famous wines of Basilicata is theย Aglianico Doc, Moscato and Malvasia, a typical dessert wine.
