Puglia

I present to you one of our Italian pearls, a summer and winter destination not to be missed: Puglia.

Puglia is one of the Italian regions most loved by tourists, thanks to its unique cultural, artistic and landscape heritage. In fact, the heel of Italy offers an exceptional coast that is always appreciated, but even more so in the summer.

Puglia borders Molise to the north-west and Campania and Basilicata to the west, while it is bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the east and north and by the Ionian Sea to the south. Already this general overview on the position of Puglia makes you understand many things, and we will go to discover many others together.

In this article I want to discover all the cards of this wonderful region, which will surely make you want to visit.

It will be a journey through art, culture, natural beauty and good food, with a wide choice of tourist itineraries that you can organize with us at Amami Viaggi.

Beaches

Let’s start uncovering the cards! Welcoming and sunny, Puglia is a destination for everyone: from families with children to young people looking for recreation and entertainment, but also for romantic getaways or honeymoons close to home.

Puglia boasts some of the most beautiful beaches on our peninsula, I would even say in the world. In fact, you will surely have heard of “the Maldives of Salento”, the reference is precisely to make it clear that the competition is truly international.

The water gives a surprising turquoise color, which has repeatedly obtained the title of the Blue Flag. The coast is presented in the northern area with rocky and wild stretches characterized by breathtaking cliffs overlooking the sea, while in the southern area, nature has given us golden, soft and soft beaches that stretch for many kilometers. Continuing on the southern area, we find the famous Salento peninsula. Between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea it is characterized by the presence of the wind; the beaches are certainly accessible but you can be caressed by the north wind and the sirocco wind.

Among the beaches, Punta Prosciutto and Torre Lapillo stand out, which are considered among the most beautiful.

Punta Prosciutto

Punta Prosciutto beach (in local dialect “Li Prisuddi”) is located within the Palude del Conte and Duna Costiera Natural Park, between Taranto and Lecce.

A coast characterized by soft white sand with water that is really difficult for me to describe; let’s talk about shades of wonder that the color of the sky has. The beach stretches for about 2 km and it is possible to practice numerous sports and water sports such as sailing and diving. The frame closes with lush vegetation that makes it absolutely magical.

Lapillus Tower

Torre Lapillo beach is no different. It too develops for about 2 km. This bay offers fine sand and crystal clear water. The name of the beach derives from the watchtower located along the coast.

Vignanotica beach in the Gargano

A splendid coastline made of sand mixed with gravel. The beach is surrounded by a high white cliff and along the coast there are numerous sea caves. The sea has clear water and is characterized by high and gravelly waters. The presence of the cliff makes the beach kissed by the sun from dawn until early afternoon and then falls behind the shadow of the cliff.

Punta dei Suini in Gallipoli

Here is the “Caribbean of the Ionian”. Punta della Suina is located within the Regional Natural Park of the Island of Sant’Andrea and the Punta Pizzo coast. We are located near Gallipoli, a very popular destination especially by young people, full of clubs and nightlife. The beach is golden and very thin with a turquoise colored sea.

Bear Tower

Also known as Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle, it is located within the municipality of Melendugno. This coast has repeatedly received the title of the Blue Flag for its waters. The coast characterized by fine white sand is bordered to the north by a ruined tower from the 16th century, the Torre dell’Orso, and to the south by a pair of rocks known as “the two sisters”. The name “Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle” derives from the presence of the two rocks which, according to a legend, represent two local girls who died while bathing in these waters. For their early disappearance, the Gods wanted to remember them by transforming their bodies into two stacks.

The Bay of the Turks

We are located inside the protected oasis of the Alimini Lakes, the Baia dei Turchi is a beautiful beach that has received several times both the title of the Blue Flag and the 5 Sails of Legambiente. A mix of green pine forests and a white sandy beach bathed by a truly clear sea.

Torre Pozzelle beach

Torre Pozzelle beach is located a few kilometers from Ostuni. We are talking about the most beautiful and wildest stretch of coast in the area. Among the cliffs, one of the most suggestive beaches of Salento is set, which is characterized by rock formations and small tongues of sand.

Perhaps I discovered too many cards together, but perhaps this way I made you want to book even before concluding the article. In fact, we haven’t finished yet, Puglia is also a region rich in cities of art and ancient villages, among which Lecce, Bari, Trani and Ostuni stand out.

Salento

A famous saying contains all the flavor of the peninsula, more precisely of Salento. “Salentu: lu sule, lu mare, lu ientu” or: “Salerno: the sun, the sea, the wind”.

The so-called “heel of the boot”, Salento attracts many tourists for its captivating mix: Sea, sun and wind: clear waters, wild landscapes and the wind which, in addition to making you enjoy the warm sun a little more, also gives possibility to practice sports such as kite-surfing or surfing.

Lecce

Called the “Florence of the South”, it is famous for its Baroque flavor and for its monuments, such as the Cathedral of Lecce and the Basilica of Santa Croce. It is not only a summer destination, indeed, it is also highly appreciated in winter. Lecce presents itself as a city rich in Roman, Medieval and Renaissance art testimonies even if it is mainly Baroque. Flamboyant decorations that cover the buildings, the intense colors of Lecce stones. In short, I think I have already convinced you to go and visit it.

Bari

A Bari proverb reads: “If Paris had the sea, it would be a small Bari”. It’s not Paris but still it’s a beautiful city in southern Italy. Bari is mainly the city of stones, with its historic center built entirely with limestone. It boasts historic buildings such as the Church of San Nicola, the Sevo-Norman castle, one of the most important Romanesque-style monuments in Italy. Then there is old Bari, the beating heart and spirit of the city.

Ostuni

With the nickname “white city”, Ostuni makes room and stands out for the color of its white houses and its enchanting historic center. A mix of elegance, popular sincerity that enchants the eyes of those who visit it but also of those who look at it.

Trulli

The list is still very long since Alberobello with its trulli remains a must in Puglia. A place that you will not see anywhere else and last but not least it has the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its approximately 1400 trulli.

Polignano and Monopoli

Polignano a Mare with its charm that revolves around its houses with white facades, perched on cliffs 20 meters above sea level.

Monopoli whose visit combines perfectly with Polignano a Mare because they are only 15 minutes away by car. Worth a visit for its charming old town and its coast.

The kitchen

The Apulian cuisine is one of the tastiest in Italy, with genuine typical dishes handed down from distant traditions. Among the most famous Apulian dishes are orecchiette with turnip tops, Lecce pasticciotto, tarallo, stuffed mussels and Altamura bread.

Furthermore, in Puglia there is no shortage of cellars. Local wines boast international exports and equally important recognitions; among the most famous are the Primitivo di Manduria, the Salice Salentino and the Negroamaro.

Puglia is also oil. The green gold!

First producer of the peninsula with almost 2 million quintals per year with immense expanses of olive groves. It is precisely the millstones and the ancient oil mills that show the ancestral respect and dedication of the Apulians for this extraordinary tradition of flavour.

I hope I have intrigued you even if “I repeat” the list is still very long, my duty is to have aroused in you the desire to discover and visit this wonderful region.

Puglia offers so much and we at Amami Viaggi will make sure you experience all the emotions that you will remember forever.
