Is a region of Central Italy with capital Rome. It is bordered by Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Abruzzi, Molise and Campania, and is washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Inside of it there is also Vatican City. Lazio attracts tourists, both Italian and international thanks to the rich artistic heritage of culture and natural beauty, parks and lakes.

The provinces are: Rome, Frosinone, Latina, Viterbo, Rieti.

WHAT SEE

Lazio - Michele Bitetto

There many are the famous squares: Piazza di Spagna; with the famous staircase of Trinità dei Monti, Piazza Farnese and Piazza Navona with “Fontana dei quattro fiumi” de Bernini‘s; the eighteenth-century Trevi Fountain, where tourists throw a coin as a wish to return to the eternal city. A few kilometers far from Rome we find, the Castelli Romani, ideal places for picnics and outings.

Rome is called the “eternal city “is an open air museum which holds centuries of history: the famous Colosseo, also known as ‘ Flavian Amphitheater” where Gladiators battled, flanked by the famous Arco of Constantino; Via dei Fori Imperiali, in ancient Rome, the main place of public and private life with the temples, churches, public buildings and sacred surrounded by greenery and the Roman Forum; Castel Sant’Angelo, mausoleum of the emperor Hadrian; Vatican City the smallest independent State (seat of the Papal States), with the famous Piazza San Pietro and the Cappella Sistina where you can admire the “Giudizio Universale” by Michelangelo.

TRADITIONAL CUISINE

Typical cuisine is based on simple dishes.  Among the main courses are “gnocchi”, “spaghetti all’amatriciana” made with Bacon and pecorino), “spaghetti alla Carbonara” and “rigatoni alla pajata” (rigatoni with a sauce made with intestines of suckling calf), and the famous “bucatini cacio e pepe”. Second course dishes include lamb, “Trippa trasteverina”, “Coda alla Vaccinara” and “saltimbocca alla romana” (based on veal). Very popular are also the Roman artichoke (cooked alla giudia or matticella), the pork, olives of Gaeta, olive oil of Sabina and chestnuts of the Cimini Mountains. Among sweets you find: “maritozzi”, soft bun with pine nuts, raisins and candied orange peel. The pastry filled with ricotta and patties “bocconotti” and “pangiallo”, a cake made with walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pine nuts and honey.  Among the wines: Frascati, the EST! EST!! EST!!! from Montefiascone, Aprilia, Aleatico from Gradoli and the Genezzano.

WHAT TO DO

In addition to rich historical, Lazio also offers parks and nature reserves, from the National Park of Circeo to the regional natural Park of the Castelli Romani, the natural monument Garden della Ninfa to the Appia Antica regional park where you can enjoy activities such as birdwatching.

In the regional natural park of Bracciano-Martignano, the two lakes are paradise for sailors and kayakers while; for those who prefer the sea, the most popular beach destinations of Lazio are Gaeta, Ostia, Anzio, San Felice Circeo and the Ponza archipelago which offers wonderfull depths to be explored, rich in flora and fauna.

The Spas are an attraction for those seeking cures and relaxation at Fiuggi and Tivoli.

Viterbo for mountain lovers, the famous ski resorts of Terminillo e Arcinazzo that offer possibilities for trekking, cycling, mountain biking, hiking, climbing and walking.

Rome also offers all kinds of entertainment, every year there are countless cultural events, literature, exhibitions, festivals in addition the shopping in the famous Via Condotti, Via Frattina, Via Borgognona and Via Margutta, heart of “made in Italy” fashion.
